Brian - I wasn’t even talking about the Nazis. I meant the whole Jones/Jones Jr. subplot and, despite my notorious and intransigent atheism, the “do you believe?” aspect.

Of course now I realize I misread your comment, and you were comparing Crusade to Raiders. Not sure I agree anyway, though. Indy’s first escape from the jungle was worth the ticket price. And there was the “duel” with the swordsman in the bazaar (still one of the funniest moments in film). And Karen Allen is by far the superior love interest; the others were screechy divas (Capshaw) or Aryan automatons (the chick in Crusade).

And like I said, moral uplift is easy to achieve when you’re fighting goose-stepping morons. Other than at the very end of Crusade, there was never any real attempt to humanize any of the villains, although I don’t consider that to be crucial to enjoying most action flicks.

I submit that Crusade has more and more thrilling action scenes than Raiders, better character development and stronger moral uplift.

But any movie can boast “stronger moral uplift” when the antagonists are Nazis. Die Hard had Alan Rickman, man. ALAN RICKMAN! “Yippee-ki-yo, mudderfacker!”

DH’s awesomeness is made even more apparent by how mediocre the sequels are.

Last Crusade isn't even the best movie of the series, IMO. I'd vote for Die Fscking Hard myself. I wasn't aware this was even up for debate. But Raiders is a fairly close #2.

Heh, I think this kind of illustrates why it’s ultimately futile to compare the Indy movies to each other; “Crusade” has by far the better emotional payoff, but “Raiders” has by far the better visceral payoff.
