and I never let the mic magnetize me no more

First: c/o IMDb:

Jackie Chan and Jet Li team up together for the first time ever in The Forbidden Kingdom, filmed on location in China and featuring the martial arts choreography of Woo-Ping Yuen (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). While hunting down bootleg kung-fu DVDs in a Chinatown pawnshop, Jason Tripitikas (Michael Angarano) makes a discovery that sends him back in time to ancient China, where he’s charged with finding the Monkey King, a fabled warrior imprisoned by the powerful Jade War Lord. With the help of kung fu master Lu Yan (Jackie Chan) and a band of misfit warriors including Silent Monk (Jet Li), Jason embarks on his journey, hoping to succeed in his quest and find a way to get back home. [emphasis mine]

Why couldn’t this have been the best movie of all time, instead of the worst? God damn it.

Also: I’m considering buying a video camera. I spotted a Panasonic PV-GS320 in Best Buy the other day for about $350 and I’m leaning toward that one. The price is right for a 3-CCD camera. The obvious downside is that it lacks a mic input.

I can also get a Canon ZR800 for about half that price, which does come with a mic input. However, it’s only got about 0.68 megapixels of image quality.

I’d like some advice from you pros before I drop the money. My criteria are:

REQUIRED: Firewire input, Mini-DV, does not contain the word “Sony”
PREFERRED: 3-CCD, mic input
BONUS: Good low-light, good battery life

And then: I’m going to buy both part of a tailgate parking spot and some BC football season tickets this year. Let’s go Eagles.

  2. what’s your price range, and what kind of mic would you be using? I’m assuming the prosumer level stuff, and that panasonic that shoots in 24p are out of your range?

  3. Dave – Price range is flexible, though I’m not likely to top $500. Definitely shooting for “prosumer” level – I don’t know that I’m good enough to drop money on a serious camcorder.

  4. What’s with the hate on Sony? Just curious.

  5. The proprietary bullshit on most of their electronics has surpassed annoying (in my eyes) and now reaches the rank of outright counterproductive.

  6. I kinda want to kill all the fanboys who thought putting Jet Li and Jackie Chan is the same movie was a good idea.

  7. I can kind of see it having potential, even though one’s a Wushu demo veteran and one’s a classically trained actor. But … the concept … it … dude.

  8. For camcorders, remember that it’s not just the number of CCDs: it’s also the SIZE. The bigger the CCDs, the better the low-light performance. Also get a camera where you can manually adjust white balance, shutter, f-stop, etc.

Don’t worry about “megapixels”. That only has meaning for digital stills. Standard-def miniDV has to conform to NTSC standards, so all that bragging about the pretty still images means shit when it comes to video quality. And besides, the more pixels you cram onto a small sensor, the worse performance can become.

  9. Those panasonic camera that shoot in 24p are ratter cool.

You look at yet? They always sem to have a pretty wide array of stuff.

I dunno how you feel about used camera. But perhaps look around at the places that rent them and see if they have a used GL1 or something of the sort kicking about for sale.
